Iowa County Codes and Coordinates

This document contains codes and primary latitudes and longitudes for counties in Iowa.  This data can be joined to data provided by agencies to establish common references and to support the creation of choropleth maps on the Open Data Portal.

  1. Feature ID: Permanent, unique feature record identifier for Named Physical and Cultural Geographic Features (Except Roads and Highways) of the United States, Its Territories, Outlying Areas, and Freely Associated Areas, and the Waters of the Same to the Limit of the Twelve-Mile Statutory Zone (INCITS 446-2008).
  2. FIPS County Code: A federal information processing series five-digit code for the identification of counties and county equivalents of the United States and its insular and associated areas, for the purpose of information interchange among data processing systems. (INCITS 31-2009).
  3. County Number: A two digit code commonly used for counties in Iowa.  It is important to set this as text, as a few codes begin with leading zeros.
  4. Primary latitude and longitude in decimal degrees that create the primary point for the county as provided by U.S. Geological Survey, 19810501, U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS): U.S. Geological Survey, Reston, VA.  The primary point is generally at or near the geographic center of the county.
